Transfer Credits

Wondering how you can earn credit for past courses when you transfer from one school to the other? Find the information you need to earn your degree in a timely manner.

Minnesota has three main resources for helping students transfer credits.

Minnesota Transfer is the official guide for seamless transfer within Minnesota institutions of higher education. It offers a step–by–step process for students, as well as information for educators and transfer specialists.

Minnesota u.select (formerly MnCAS) is a multi-state, web-based transfer information system which helps transfer students move from school to school and earn degrees in a timely manner. In Minnesota the u.select website is a cooperative effort of the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

Students are encouraged to plan a course of study carefully and early and consult an advisor at the school to which they wish to transfer.

u.select is a free service to learn about:

  • How courses transfer between participating colleges and universities.
  • Degree programs that are offered by colleges and universities.
  • Transfer planning.

  1. How does u.select work?

u.select works best for students who:

    • Know where they are going to transfer, or at least have their options narrowed down to a few colleges or universities.
    • Are trying to choose a transfer institution and or a major.
    • Take one or two classes at another college or university then transfer back to their original institution
    • Want to explore their higher education options.

    u.select can inform students:

    • If their credits will transfer.
    • How credits will be applied toward a degree at another college or university.
    • About transferable courses which can be taken at another institution and how they will count toward their degree at their original school.

Anyone can create a free u.select account in order to:

    • View course equivalencies.
    • See program requirements.
    • Enter and store course work.
    • Request an evaluation of transfer work against a program.

    u.select strives to:

    • Provide accurate data to students regarding course equivalencies and applicability.
    • Provide an accurate resource for advisors who advise transfer students.
    • Provide an avenue for schools to present their "transfer friendliness."
    • Not be limited to state boundaries.

DARS, the Degree Audit Reporting System Project provides students with current and accurate transfer and course information to enhance their degree and program planning.

  • Minnesota State Colleges and Universities students have access via the student information web portal to their DARS reports.
  • University of Minnesota students use DARS through the Academic Progress Audit System (APAS).

A DARS or APAS report shows students:

  • Courses and requirements already completed for their declared major at the institution they are attending.
  • Courses and requirements they still need to complete for that major.
  • Course options to plan registration.
  • How previously taken Transfer Courses and approved Academic Petitions/Exceptions apply toward their graduation requirements.
