Every time you send a resume you should send a cover letter with it to introduce yourself and highlight your qualifications. Your cover letter is your opportunity to personalize your resume and target your skills.

Cover letters can be written in many different formats, but all cover letters should follow acceptable business letter standards. This is important because your cover letter will be read by people who are part of the hiring process. Whether it is the person who actually has the final say about who will be hired, or someone assisting them, your cover letter could increase your odds of getting a particular job. You will want it to impress everyone who might read it.

Cover letters generally follow a format like the one below:

Your Name
Street Address
City, State and Zip Code
Phone Number
email address

Date

Recipient's Name
Recipient's Job Title
Name of Business
Street Address
City, State and Zip Code

Dear Mr./Ms.________________________:

First Paragraph: State the reason for writing. Name the specific position or type of work for which you are applying for. Mention how you learned about the job opening.

Second Paragraph: Explain why you are interested in working for this employer and specify how you are the ideal candidate for this position. Do not repeat the information on your resume. Instead include something special or unique about yourself that will benefit the employer. Remember, the reader will consider this an example of your writing skills.

Third Paragraph: Mention your resume is enclosed and indicate your desire to meet with the employer. You may want to suggest alternate dates and times, or simple advise them of your flexibility to the time and place. Include day and evening contact information. Also include a statement or question that will encourage the reader to respond. Be sure to communicate your plan to follow-up. For example, state that you will be in the area and can meet with them on certain dates at specific times. Or explain that you will call on a certain date to set up a meeting. Finally, thank the employer for his or her time.

Sincerely,
