What are assessments?

Assessments are tools that help people explore their skills and interests. Counselors use career assessments to match skills, abilities, values, interests and aptitude to careers.

Assessments may also help with:

  • Deciding what to study in college or technical school
  • Choosing a career path
  • Making a career change

Assessments are meant to help guide career exploration and are only one piece of that puzzle. Career explorers should take multiple types of assessments and gather much information about themselves before making any major career or educational decisions. They should be reminded that assessment results can change with increased education and work experience.

Using assessment results

Assessment results come in a variety of formats that are not always easy to decipher and understand. It's important to have results interpreted by a qualified professional such as career counselors who specialize in assessment resources. They have experience with interpreting assessments results and recommending realistic career options to their clients.

High school students interested in taking an assessment should contact their school guidance counselor. High school graduates can find career counselors at their local colleges, private job agencies or their local WorkForce Center. WorkForce Centers have an array of assessments and people who specialize in using them. Visit a Minnesota WorkForce Center to take advantage of their assessment resources.

Assessment fees

The price of assessments and the services offered with them vary. Some assessments and related services, like those at Minnesota WorkForce Centers, are free or are provided as part of a career planning course. Others, like those at private agencies, provide assessment counseling for fees that can range from $30 to $60 per hour.
